If you’re dreaming about surfing in warm water, surrounded by tropical mountains and vibrant Brazilian culture, Rio de Janeiro might be exactly what you're looking for.
But is Rio really good for surfing?
When is the best time to come?
Where are the best waves?
Here’s everything you need to know before planning your surf trip to Rio.
Why Surf in Rio de Janeiro?
Rio isn’t just famous for Christ the Redeemer and Copacabana. It’s also one of Brazil’s most consistent surf destinations.
In the west zone of the city — especially around Macumba Beach — waves break almost all year long. We surf here around 300–350 days per year, depending on conditions.
Warm water, sandy bottoms, long beaches, and different peaks make Rio perfect for:
Beginners learning their first pop-up
Intermediate surfers improving technique
Advanced surfers chasing powerful swells
Best Surf Spots in Rio
🏄 Macumba Beach
Located in the Recreio area, Macumba is considered the best surf zone in Rio. It offers long sandy stretches with multiple peaks, making it ideal for surf lessons and progression.

Long beach breaks that work well with bigger swells. If you want to avoid crowds, we have some secret spots.
Best Time to Surf in Rio
The good news? You can surf here year-round.
April to October → More consistent swell (autumn & winter season)
November to March → Warmer water, smaller waves, perfect for beginners
Even in winter, water temperature stays comfortable compared to Europe or North America. Around 22 degrees Celcius / 71.6 degrees Fahrenheit
Is Rio Safe for Surf Travelers?
Yes — especially in the Recreio / Macumba area, where the surf culture is strong and the atmosphere is more local and relaxed compared to central Rio.
Like any big city, you just need basic awareness. Staying near the beach and with local guidance makes everything smoother.
